Botulinum Therapy

Botulinum toxin is a neuro toxin, which blocks the transmission of neuro impulse from the neuron toward the muscle fiber. Thus the muscle remains in a relaxed condition for a certain period, it does not contract. That is how it prevents the forming of new wrinkles and the deepening of the existing ones.

Botox is the number one choice when it comes to mimic wrinkles treatment in the upper facial area: forehead (surprise wrinkle), between eyebrows, the so called ‘angry wrinkle’ and around the eyes- crow’s feet. Botox effect shows between day 4 and day 14 after the procedure. Firs application lasts about 3 to 4 months. Subsequent procedures last longer-between 6 and 9 months but the effect depends on the individual muscle tone.

Botulinum toxin is most effective when used as prevention. Its applying should start before dynamic wrinkles become static, deep in the skin and permanent. Otherwise the effect is relaxed muscles and mimic activity limitation, but the existing wrinkles remain visible.

The manipulation is slightly painful and causes some discomfort. Local anesthetics may be applied during the procedure. Unwanted side effects may occur such as redness, slight swelling, headache, heaviness or tension in the treated area, but they all fade away in a couple of hours or within 1 or 2 days.

• Avoid taking Aspirin or other medication or food supplements with anticoagulant effect one week before the procedure as they slow down the process of blood clotting and increase the risk of hematoma.
• Avoid alcohol 1 or 2 days prior to the procedure.

• Do not rub and do not massage the treated zone at least 24 hours after injection.
• It is advisable that you do not lie or lean 5 to 6 hours after the procedure.
• Do not drink alcohol in the day of treatment and do not clean your face with rubbing alcohol containing products.
• Avoid sport or heating procedures in the day of the procedure.
• Active mimicking in the injected area in the day of the procedure helps speeding up the effect.
• 2 weeks after the procedure visit your doctor so he can estimate the effectiveness of the procedure and whether a correction is needed.
